Asbestos Abatement

Employers and building owners are greatly concerned with asbestos, lead and mold exposure when planning a renovation or demolition project. The OSHA Construction Standard for Asbestos (29 CFR 1926.1101) details training requirements, medical monitoring, respiratory protection, prohibited activities, and work practices for dealing with asbestos-containing materials (ACM). It also requires building owners to notify employees and contractors of the presence of asbestos in their building. Similar policies, training methods, respiratory protection procedures, and work practices are followed for lead and mold.

Eagle Environmental® assists customers in determining if their property has asbestos-containing materials (ACM), lead, or mold, assessing the potential risk, and selecting the most cost effective method of properly managing and performing the abatement work. Abatement work can consist of removal, repair, encapsulation and/or enclosure.

INSPECTIONS

Eagle Environmental is certified to perform inspections for ACM, lead and mold. Following our inspection, the building owner can decide to:

  1. Manage the ACM, lead, or mold in place, or
  2. Have the ACM, lead or mold removed, or
  3. A combination of both.

We often recommend an independent consultant to assess all abatement needs and then to recommend a course of abatement to the customer. If the building owner decides to proceed with abatement, we will design an abatement plan and provide air monitoring and project management. Following abatement, we will conduct an inspection to ensure that the asbestos, lead or mold has been properly and thoroughly removed. We can provide, at customer request, air clearance monitoring to evaluate the airborne concentrations.

SAMPLING

Eagle Environmental uses the following sampling techniques:

ASBESTOS:

  • Asbestos identification by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) - this is the EPA’s recommended method.
  • Asbestos percent determination by gravimetric & high temperature reduction and point count techniques.
  • Airborne fiber concentrations by Phase Contrast Microscopy – this is OSHA’s required method to determine worker exposures.
  • Airborne asbestos concentration by Transmission Electron Microscopy – this is required by the EPA after asbestos has been abated in schools.

LEAD PAINT

  • Flame Atomic Absorption (AA) analysis of lead in paint and soil
  • AA analysis by graphite furnace of lead in water

LAB ANALYSIS

As a service to our clients, we can arrange for the analytical laboratory testing of asbestos and lead samples. Asbestos analysis will be performed by a qualified National Voluntary Lab Accreditation Program (NVLAP) and/or American International Health Alliance (AIHA) accredited laboratory. Licensed lead testing laboratories must use Atomic Absorption analysis. We provide clients with a complete written report of the analysis.
